I'm selling some of my collection of vintage wooden type face blocks. I have collected some of them over the years and more came with my Victorian cast iron press when I had it shipped over from England. Old letterpress blocks like these would have been used back in the day to print items such as posters, notices and bills of fare. Markets, livestock sales, fairs, shows and all sorts of public events would have been advertised in this way.
I have some complete alphabets, some alphabets with letters missing and quite a few individual letters too. For those of you who are not printmakers, please note, type is set in reverse so the blocks are the mirror image of the letters they print. This may not matter for A M O or Y for example, depending on the style of the font, but will apply to G F and Q.
All these letters are very old. All of them show signs of use and wear as you would expect. I have cleaned them to a certain extent but I have not polished them or scraped off years of patina as in my opinion this is all part of their charm.
